Premiere: 90 minutes with Mustafa Dzhemilev at “Molodist”
On October 28, the Kyiv Cinema will host a premiere of the documentary “Mustafa”. The film will be presented in the program “Ukrainian premieres” at the Kyiv International Film Festival “Molodist”.
Work on the film began in February 2015 and lasted for half a year. Although initially the project’s team sought to create a full-length documentary, the format was slightly modified during the process. 5 recreated scenes from the life of Mustafa Dzhemilev will immerse the audience into the atmosphere of times past, making “Mustafa” a film in the format of feature documentary.
The film is based on Mustafa’s biography, and the memories of people whom he met on his way. Among them are dissidents, human rights activists and other Crimean Tatar leaders. The idea of the film is to tell the audience about the main events in the life of Mustafa Dzhemilev – deportation, his first detention, and the world’s longest hunger strike lasting 303 days, and more. In order to tell these stories, the team visited 5 countries and recorded 26 interviews.
Ahmed Sarikhalil, director of the film “Mustafa”: “In the film I wanted to show Dzhemilev as an ordinary man with all his weaknesses. Books give us this impression that he is a brave knight, which he certainly is. But when you speak with him personally, you get struck by how down to earth he is and his great sense of humor. I did not want to immediately introduce him as this hero. Even though he does turn out to be a hero”.
The film will include recreated scenes from the life of Mustafa Dzhemilev: you will visit his prison, speak with his associates in the struggle for the return of the Crimea in the Soviet times and in the modern times, feel like an activist of the national Crimean Tatar movement, plunge into the life story of a strong and unbroken leader whose name is Mustafa Dzhemilev.
The film’s crew:
Ahmed Sarikhalil, director
Tamila Tasheva, producer,
Iukhym Chupakhin, Ukrainian composer, pianist, sound producer,
Vakhtang Kipiani, Ukrainian journalist, essayist, historian,
Maksym Pasichnik, the protagonist of the film, playing the role of Mustafa Dzhemilev.
In the near future the film is planned to show at the largest national American independent film festival “Sundance” and several other documentary festivals. “Mustafa” will also be released in theatres in Ukraine and Europe.
